Putra Mosque
A rose-pink mosque floating beside a lake.
Story
In Malaysia's garden city of Putrajaya there is a mosque the colour of a rose. Its walls are made of pink granite, so it turns from soft peach in the morning to deep rose at sunset.
It sits right at the edge of a man-made lake, and part of it seems to float on the water. Visitors arrive on a wide plaza where families feed fish from the railings.
The design mixes ideas from Morocco, Persia and Malaysia. The tall minaret, at 116 metres, was inspired by a famous mosque in Baghdad, and the main dome is decorated with delicate patterns and Qur'anic calligraphy.
About 15,000 people can pray inside. On Fridays the plaza fills with people, and boats drift by on the lake behind them.
Visitors of every background are welcome to look around outside prayer times, and the mosque lends long rose-coloured robes to guests so everyone can walk in comfortably and respectfully.
