The holiest mosque in Islam, home of the Ka'bah.
Story
Long, long ago, Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and his young son Isma'il were given a very special job by Allah. They built a small cube-shaped house in the middle of the desert and called it the Ka'bah. It became the very first place on Earth where people came together to worship Allah alone.
For many years, Prophet Ibrahim and Isma'il carefully placed each stone, asking Allah to accept their work. When the walls became too tall, they used a special stone to stand on โ and you can still see the footprints of Ibrahim near the Ka'bah today, inside a golden glass case called Maqam Ibrahim.
The Ka'bah sits in the middle of the biggest mosque in the world, Masjid al-Haram. The mosque keeps growing bigger and bigger because more people visit every year. Today, over two million Muslims can pray here at the same time, standing shoulder to shoulder like one giant family.
Five times every single day, Muslims from China, Nigeria, Brazil, Indonesia, Turkey โ everywhere! โ turn their faces toward this one little black cube. Imagine billions of hearts pointing in the same direction at the same time. That is the magic of the Ka'bah.
When pilgrims arrive, they walk around the Ka'bah seven times. This is called Tawaf. They also drink sweet water from the Zamzam well, a miracle spring that started gushing under baby Isma'il's feet thousands of years ago โ and it has never dried up since!

Adab & etiquette
- โขEnter in a state of wudu and begin tawaf at the Black Stone corner, keeping the Ka'bah on your left.
- โขPoint to the Black Stone from a distance rather than fighting the crowd to kiss it.
- โขAny du'a in your own language is valid โ there is no fixed script for each circuit.
- โขMen uncover the right shoulder (idtiba') only during tawaf of Umrah, and cover it again for prayer.
- โขKeep your voice low. Historic mosques are living places of worship, not tourist attractions.
- โขSilence your phone, and never walk in front of someone who is praying.
- โขAsk before photographing people, and avoid filming during prayer rows.
- โขLeave the place cleaner than you found it โ take your litter with you.
Best timings
The mataf is calmest between midnight and Fajr, and after Isha on weekdays. Avoid the hour before each fard prayer, and the whole of Friday morning.
Dress code
Men: two white unstitched ihram cloths, no perfume after ihram. Women: ordinary modest clothing, face and hands uncovered in ihram, no niqab or gloves.
With kids
- ๐ถAgree on a meeting point (a gate number) and write your phone number on your child's wristband.
- ๐ถDo tawaf on the upper floor with young children โ it is longer but far safer and calmer.
- ๐ถLet children count circuits aloud on their fingers โ it keeps them engaged and accurate.
- ๐ถPlan short visits โ 45 focused minutes beat three exhausted hours.
- ๐ถCarry water, snacks and a small bag for shoes; heat and marble floors tire little feet fast.
- ๐ถFinish with one shared du'a so the trip ends as worship, not just sightseeing.
Avoid this
- โ ๏ธDo not touch, kiss or rub walls, tombs or pillars seeking blessing โ this is not from the Sunnah.
- โ ๏ธDo not direct any du'a or request to the dead; du'a is for Allah alone.
- โ ๏ธAvoid crowding, pushing or arguing โ the reward of the journey is lost in bad manners.
- โ ๏ธDon't believe every story a guide tells; check unusual claims with a trusted scholar or source.
