Story
The Dome of the Rock has one of the most beautiful golden domes in the world. It was built more than 1,300 years ago by Caliph Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, and the dome is covered in real gold that shines so brightly you can see it from far away.
Inside, the building is shaped like an octagon (eight sides), with stunning blue tiles, calligraphy, and a giant rock in the middle. That rock is the famous spot from which the Prophet ﷺ rose up to the seven heavens on the night of Al-Mi'raj.
It is NOT a regular mosque for the five daily prayers — that is the silver-domed Qibli mosque nearby. Both buildings sit inside the larger Al-Aqsa Sanctuary.
The Dome's beautiful tiles and shining gold remind every Muslim that Jerusalem is loved and honored. The whole world recognizes its bright shape, and it has been on Islamic art and books for over a thousand years.
